about

When I was a boy my grandmother gave me a wooden sign with Psalms 119:105 painted on it. It hung on my bedroom wall and would glow in the dark for a while after I turned off the light. So it was the last thing I saw every night when I went to bed.

The 119th Psalm consists of 22 eight verse sections. Not coincidentally, there are 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet. Each section is assigned a Hebrew letter. The words for this song are taken from the sections called Teth, Nun, and Schin; Hence the name of the song.

Teth speaks of suffering affliction and enduring through it (“It is good for me that I have been afflicted…”).

Nun speaks of light (“Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and light unto my path.” ~ verse 105), and being quickened by the word (verse 107).

Schin speaks of having peace (“Great peace have they who love thy law…”).

So there is a progression here to the sections:

Affliction --> Quickening --> Peace

lyrics

TETH-NUN-SCHIN

Before I was afflicted, I went astray.
It’s good I’ve been afflicted, Thy Word lights my way.
And great peace have they, great peace have they,
Great peace have they who love they law.
And nothing shall offend them, nothing shall offend them,
nothing shall offend who love thy law.

Now I’ve kept Thy Word, and learned Thy statutes.
It’s good I’ve been afflicted, for you’ve quickened me!
Thy Word is a LAMP, unto my feet,
and a light unto my PATH.
Thy Word is a LAMP, unto my feet,
and a light unto my PATH.

People can be cruel, downright unkind,
We’re all guilty of this, we’ve all sinned sometime.
But we can rise above this, we can rise above this,
we can rise above this through His law.
Then these can be the best days, these can be the best days,
these can be the best days, of our lives.

Before I was afflicted, I went astray.
It’s good I’ve been afflicted, Thy Word lights my way.
And great peace have they, great peace have they,
Great peace have they who love they law.
And nothing shall offend them, nothing shall offend them,
nothing shall offend who love thy law.
